OSHA has regulated workplace asbestos since the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, with industry-specific standards that have been tightened multiple times as evidence of harm has accumulated. The current PEL took effect in 1994.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is the name for a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals resistant to heat and corrosion. It includes chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, actinolite, and any of these materials that have been chemically treated or altered. An asbestos-containing material (ACM) is any material containing more than 1% asbestos.
